Costa Rica houses a rather large variety of both flora and fauna. About 25% of the country’s land area is in protected national parks and protected areas, the largest percentage of protected areas in the whole world. Although Costa Rica only represents about 0.03% of the planet’s landmass, it contains 5% of the world’s biodiversity. The country has successfully managed to diminish deforestation from one of the worst rates in the world in the 70-80’s to virtually zero by 2005.
