Enjoy the greenness and astonishing views of the cloud forest. Get to know all the secrets of the cloud forest while you walk through palms, ferns, flowers and ancient trees covered by thousand of plants at the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.
Observe imposing trees like Strangler Figs and Wild Avocados or thousands of air plants living in the canopy of the forest like Bromeliads, Orchids and Moss and a wide array of insects, mammals and reptiles. At the end of the trail, wonderful species of hummingbirds will fly around you with beautiful bright colors delighting your eyes at the hummingbird gallery.
Great tour for those who wish to observe the wonders that are hidden in the darkness of the forest just before nightfall, thus allowing seeing animals that wake up and others seeking sleep in their nests and burrows. This tour begins right on to the trail about 1 mile long (1.8 km) to look for insects, birds and nocturnal mammals that are just getting ready to come out where animals like can be watched.
During this night hike, you not only look for nocturnal wild life, but you also experience a unique perspective during the night where you discover incredible feelings and sensations that you meet when you turn on/off your flashlight. Live this exceptional experience, as you observe the change from day to nocturnal animals after twilight in the cloud forest.
Relaxing walk through a Butterfly Garden where you can observe 40 to 45 different species of beautiful butterflies flying around you with amazing colors on their wings. In this garden, you will learn about cycle of life, defense mechanisms, feeding and behavior of Costa Rican butterflies and later, you will visit the surroundings beautiful gardens, where butterflies can be found in their natural habitat.
You will learn all the stages, starting with the plant, the harvest, drying, toasting and grinding of the bean, the tour starts with an introduction to the life sequence of a coffee plant starting with the coffee seed itself and taking a look at its fascinating evolutionary cycle. You will learn about the ways that the coffee cherries are picked, the lifestyle of the workers that carry out this task, their stories and the immigration that occurs during the harvest season.
When the coffee cherries are ready to be picked (from November through to February), can be performed by the visitors. At the end of the tour you can purchase coffee related items directly from our wonderful souvenir shop or try a cup of the famous beverage we enjoy every morning.Chocolate Tour
Incorporated to the coffee tour, the chocolate tour introduces a new and exciting combination between chocolate and coffee. On this tour you will be completely immersed for 30 minutes within the world of chocolate enjoying its delicious aromas and learning about its history.
You will participate in the chocolate making process and have the opportunity to taste the fruit of the cacao and observe how the small cocoa beans are magically converted into a rich tasting chocolate drink. Get an insight into the traditional methods that our ancestors used to roast the beans, separate the husks and grind the beans. At the end of the tour you can enjoy the taste of the chocolate you’ve made in a variety of forms; liquid chocolate, plain chocolate, spiced chocolate and of course, coffee chocolate.
One of the most exciting experiences in Monteverde, zipping across the treetops on 9 steel cables through the cloud forest. A sage system of suspended cables between huge trees and platforms will allow enjoying amazing views of this lush tropical ecosystem using the most modern harnesses and safety equipment. *Restrictions apply for children under 8 years old
Excellent tour for people who wish to see the canopy of the cloud forest from a small distance, but in a more relaxing way. You will hike for about 3 kilometers with trails and bridges where you can observe different views of the forest starting from the ground and getting to the tree canopy experiencing different habitats.

The Monteverde Frog Pond is managed by a Group of biologists and conservationists, and this is much more than an amphibian zoo, it provides education and the opportunity to meet and exchange our attitudes towards animals. The Monteverde Frog Pond was built in terrariums simulating the natural habitats of each species allowing the frogs to live and reproduce while you can admire their wonderful colors.
After the guided tour around the terrariums, you are allowed to walk around the frog terrariums and the natural history exhibition. In the herpetarium you can admire over twenty-eight species of frogs and toads, and find many species that are unique of the tropics of Costa Rica, like the Blue-Jeans poisonous frog or the Red-Eyed frog and is set under roof being an excellent option for rainy days.
You will visit 3 observation rooms as well as the laboratory to see the process of cheese elaboration. A slide show will present pictures of the history of Monteverde; the beginnings of the factory and when the tour is finished, you can have a taste of six of the products of the Cheese Factory, including five types of cheese and caramel unique of Monteverde.
Visit an investigation and educational center located in Santa Elena. This orquids garden boasts 450 species of orchids; each is identified with the scientific name. You can find species endemic to Monteverde and a collection of miniature orchids, including the smallest in the world. You will enjoy more than 425 species of orchids with beautiful colors and their rich aromas (9 of them are native to Monteverde Cloud Forest).
This wonderful amphibian and reptile exhibition is perfect for learning about the Costa Rican fauna, offering and natural environment to maintain the animal’s comfort and also give comfort and security to visitors. Travel through the Tropical Cloud Forest on a real train for a 6 kilometers railway during 90 minutes. It includes a tunnel, and four bridges, one view point where you can observe the Arenal Volcano and Arenal Lake, as well as part of the Children’s Eternal Rainforest, and more.
